FEATURES, DIMENSIONS AND FLOORING OF THE BOCCE COURT
Everything you need to know to design or create a bocce court.
The game is played on a rectangular area called “court” or “campo”. It can be practiced in outdoor and indoor installations, on a flat perfectly leveled surface, delimited by containment sides.

DIMENSION ANS SIZE of bocce court
BOCCE COURT CAN BE:
- OFFICIAL or REGULATORY;
By regulations we mean measures and characteristics that make them homologable to the competent federations, so as to be able to compete in official competitions, tournaments and events.
Sizes for the AMATEUR bocce courts are:
- 15 meters long by 2.40 wide, 15×2.40 m ( 50′ x 8 ‘ feet)
- 18 meters long by 2.75 wide, 18×2.75 m ( 60′ x 9′ feet)
- 20 meters long by 3.00 meters wide, 20×3.00 m (65′ x 10′ feet)
- 22 meters in length by 3.30 in width, 22×3.30 m (72′ x 11′ feet)
- 24 meters long by 3.60 wide, 24×3.60 m (79’x12′ feet)
As amateur courts, the measurements can be larger or smaller than these exposed. These we have shown you are the most common used measures.

Dimensions for the INTERNATIONAL GAME technical regulation
- Length from 26.00 to 27.00 meters (from 85′ to 88′ feet)
- Width from 3.50 to 4.50 meters ( from 11’+6” to 14’+9” )

- Length 27.50 meters (90′ feet), with tolerance +/- 5 cm (2” inch)
- Width 4.00 meters ( 13′ fett + 1” inch), with tolerance +/- 5 cm (2” inch)
The value is to be understood as “between the lateral boards and bumbers ” in inside measurement.
Around the perimeter of the court has to be left a zone free from any obstacle size of 60 cm (2′ feet). This is calculated from the net of the useful game court. This requirement is avoid between the courts, if the courts are contiguous, and divided exclusively by the lateral or frontal containment perimeter.
Above the playing area located inside a bocce court, a minimum height must be provided 4.50 meter ( 14′ feet +9” inch) free from any obstacle.
Unless expressly approved by the FIB, in the official national competitions that take place in foreign place, these measures are mandatory. Furthermore, the ground must allow a good application of the game rules.
All the bocce court building must provide for the removal of architectural barriers ( free wheelchair access) through the ramps which allow the side proteins to be overcome. Or a disassembly system of the side protections, in order to get the wheelchair flush.
The pavement of the bocce court must be smooth and not slippery. Made in Gavirate type majolica (compacted ground court), or in synthetic resin surface installed direct on asphalt or concrete substrates.
In straight sections, with a 3 meter regulator (10′ feet) , there must be no deviations ( as rising or decrease) of more than 6 mm (1/4” inch). No any steps discontinuity.
In indoor courts the surface must be horizontal and flat. In outdoor court, evenly distributed slopes are allowed, within and not more than 0.15% lengthwise and 0.5% widthwise.
The bouncing test is performed by a “type ball” (diameter 107 mm and weight 920 g) from a height of 1 meter ( 3′ feet + 3” inch ) above the playing surface. The ball must bounce at a height not exceeding 15 cm (6” inch).

Advantages of synthetic court compared to a compacted ground court:
- A synthetic bocce court has no daily maintenance, while a ground court needs to be wet and worked constantly.
- In a synthetic court the grass cannot grow, while in compacted ground court it can.
- Synthetic surface courts are well leveled and much more hygienic than compacted ground.
- Another big advantage is that on a synthetic surface, when stops to rains, just push off the water from the court, and you can play on it immediately, this is unthinkable on a compacted ground court, which will takes many hours or a day or two to be able to walk on it.
The sport of bocce court must be practiced on flat floor, divided into regular lanes delimited by lateral sides in wood or other non-metallic material. Preferably transparent and with oscillating rubber headboards at the end (bumpers). The height of the lateral side and bocce stopper or bumper, containing the playing area, must be uniform by cm. 25 (10” inch) with tolerance +/- 2 cm (1” inch).
The bocce stopper at ends or bumpers must be made in rubber, pivoted to the upper part of metal. They must by raised from the ground allowing the swing and avoid the return of the bocce balls and pallino when hited.

REGULATORY MARKING VARIATION OF THE SWISS BOCCE COURT WITH REDUCED DIMENSIONS
The marked lines on the court takes has to be transversal lines painted with colored material (plaster, marble dust, paint or other). The important thing is that the marking has not to change the smoothness of the ground.
Marking on floor must be clearly visible and must not have a value greater than 1.5 cm.
The vertical lines must be marked on the lateral side.
FENCE or EXTERNAL PROTECTION AS RULES REQUIREMENT
Height between 110 and 120 cm (43 ” or 47” inch) from the external walking surface. The protection can be of translucent material or in wire mesh, Plexiglas, etc. The structure has to be capable to resisting the push of people who overlook the playing court as well as the impact of the bocce bawls. A protection on laterl side height is admitted height 2.00 meters ( 80” inch ) if it is made of translucent material.
On the other hand, protections with a minimum height of 200 cm must be installed from the from the external walking surface. These protections must have the same mechanical characteristics as the side protections. Therefore they must be made of translucent material or wire mesh.
It will be necessary to provide a free area zone without fixed or mobile obstacle, dimensions between the edge of the bocce court and the lateral fence, this zone must necessarily be 60 cm minimum ( 2′ feet), any exceptions to this measure has to be approved in advance on the project, into consideration by the FIB commission for approval, or the competent Sports requirement Autority for the area where is located the construction.
The courts where competitions are held must be uniformly illuminated. The light sources must be positioned to allow perfect diffusion of light over the entire playing area. In any case, the height of the lighting bodies must not be less than 4.50 meters.

All systems equipped with artificial lighting must have a safety lighting system compliant with current legislation.
CONSTRUCTION AND BUILDING TIMING
A mayolica bocce court or ground compacted court can be realized in 2 weeks, with opportune weather conditions.
The synthetic bocce court, including asphalt substrate and resin finish, takes place in just two weeks from the solid construction base. The advantage on synthectic court is that you can play on top immediately, you don’t have to wait long drying times to play on it, as on the compacted ground court require.
If it is a new construction and there is no consolidated basis, the rest and curing time of the normal concrete must be calculated in addition. Generally, the drying time is 30 days.
